History

Founder on roof doing repair. Circa 1991.Gryphon Roofing & Remodeling is a family operated business, owned by a fifth-generation Arizonan, Russel Hyman. Russel’s mother Debbie Overson, grandfather Kay Overson, and great-grandfather Ross Overson, were all born in Arizona. Ross’ parents, Henry & Margaret moved from Utah to Arizona right at the turn of the century.

When Russel was 13, he started working with his Uncle, Jan Overson, at Jan’s Roofing (in 1987) on weekends and summers. He worked over the next several years with his brother, Clinton Hyman, and other uncle, Guy Overson, starting as a shingler’s assistant, tear-off foreman, shingler, and then tile repairman. In 1994 Jan moved to Colorado leaving Russel and Clinton to run the new partnership, JRC Roofing, in Arizona while he opened the same company in Colorado Springs. Jan eventually returned to Arizona and the three continued to work together along with several other family members running the company.

1998 Brought a new chapter to the business; Russel became President and majority owner of the company as the family transformed their hard work into a corporation. Gryphon Companies, Inc. was born; the company was named Gryphon based on what the Gryphon symbolizes. (hover for details)In folklore the Gryphon is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. The Gryphon was known to be a protector of treasure and priceless posessions. Like the Gryphons of old, we are here to protect your property and offer one of a kind loyalty and service.

The year 2012 marks 25 years in business for us. We have had some name changes over the years, however we are still offering the same professionalism today as in 1987.
